Yellowstone National Park Self Tours

Most people tour Yellowstone on their own. The park is BIG, so plan plenty of drive time to explore.

If you have time, take the gorgeous Beartooth Highway from Cody and circle down through Yellowstone. You'll crest 10,000 feet and see hundreds of miles of incredible vistas.

It's been called the most scenic drive in America. We're sure you'll agree.

The park itself needs no introduction - geysers, hot pots, waterfalls, wildlife, and more in a scenic paradise that feels like a welcome leftover of a bygone era.

Yellowstone Guided Tours

Some local tour operators specialize in day trips with at least some (if not a lot) of hiking involved. If you want to get out of your car, this style of tour is probably the best fit for you. Find a tour operator that takes you to unforgettable sites or gets you off the beaten path. Either way, you'll have a chance to explore more of the park than the typical tourist. Lunch is included on the trip.

If you intend on seeing wildlife and taking lots of pictures while in Yellowstone, Cody Wyoming Adventures specializes in finding wildlife in the park.

Grub Steak does it all: hiking, fishing, photography, natural history, and transportation.

Cody Night Rodeo

Cody is the Rodeo Capital of the World! Get a dose of Wild West action your whole family will love.

This is a must for kids (and adults)! The rodeo convenes every night in Cody at 8 p.m. June through August.

Kids can participate in "pinning the bull" during the event. If you plan on coming to Cody the week of July 4, the professional rodeo is in town, and you may want to get your tickets in advance.

The rodeo arena is about 22 miles east of the ranch. Allow 30 minutes for the drive.

Whitewater Rafting

Cody has a couple of great rafting companies. We typically recommend Wyoming River Trips.

Founded in 1978 by Rick and Ron Blanchard, the owners have been featured on ESPN, Outdoor Life, as well as in Travel and Leisure, Better Homes and Gardens, and Mature Outlook magazines.

Contact them at 800-586-6661 or visit their website to see if they have a trip that is right for you. You can also check out Cody Wyoming Adventures for more trips in the area.

Museums

The Smithsonian-affiliated Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody has five sprawling museums you'll want to see.

Make time to learn about Buffalo Bill, the Plains Indians, the natural history of the region, and take a look at the Western art and firearms on display.

The Center of the West sets a high bar for the quality of its exhibits, so plan on taking your time.

Buffalo Bill Dam & Visitor Center

Stand on the precipice of a dramatic 325-foot dam that was once the highest in the world.

This dam spans a narrow canyon for the Shoshone River, creating a scenic lake just down the road from Bill Cody Ranch.

Admission is free, too, so it's well worth a stop for the scenery and history.

Hang Gliding

Looking for a bird's eye view of the Cody area? Take advantage of one of Airborne Over Cody's powered hang gliding flights.

With Airborne Over Cody, you not only have the opportunity to see the beauty of the region from above, but you'll also get to fly the aircraft as part of an instructional lesson.

Your FAA-certified flight instructor will work with you to ensure that you feel comfortable. You can even choose whether to fly the aircraft yourself or let him maintain the controls during your first flight over Cody!
